Welcome to our Perl Mongers site...
You are here because you typed in a bad URL and are scratching your head wondering what a Camel has anything to do with a badly spelt word resembling the object you find in Oysters. OR... You do in fact know that Perl is the magical, mystical language handed to us from one Larry Wall? For those who are curious, Perl is a programming language popularized by the Web but not in any way limited to the Internet in it's power. Perl is free and one of the most ported languages in existence, found on more platforms than you can shake a camel at. In any case we hope you enjoy what the Winnipeg Perl Mongers site has to offer. We hope to make this site useful to our local group as well as Perl programmers around the world.

We have the Hacks & Code section which will be a repository for various Perl code we want to share with each other and the world. Also we have a Mailing List for members, information on How to Join, Meeting Information, and many useful Links to great Perl sites out there.

We are no longer publishing our own Perl Newsletter called PubCrawl, spearheaded by Andrew Johnson, which featured many articles and a special section on the use of the Literate tool to write Perl that can be run, as well as read and documented in article form. If you want to see it brought back, let us know and help contribute.

Our Chapter met first in Nov. 1998, and meets monthly here in Winnipeg. We just recently passed our 1 year mark for the group. For those interested, some of the regular members of our group are now putting together a course that we will be teaching early in the new year. The current course we are designing is to teach Perl and CGI to those interested (for a reasonable fee TBA). Check back here for more details on the course as we finalize the details.

This group is for those just beginning with an interest in Perl, and those who care to ... oh say re-write all the best Unix tools in Perl. So if you fall somewhere in there, by all means contact us and show up for a meeting. Enjoy!

Winnipeg PM was born due to the efforts of Randy Kobes (randy@theory.uwinnipeg.ca) and Andrew Johnson (andrew-johnson@home.com) with this Webmaster Brad Fenwick (bfenwick@xviewsolutions.com) arriving in time for our first meeting in Nov/98. Send website related comments to Brad, and group related queries and such to Randy Kobes.
